Aix-En-Provence

Enjoy a scenic drive to reach the charming medieval town of Aix en Provence. The city used to be the capital of the Provence region and its attractions are many. Embark on a walking tour of the Cours Mirabeau. This wide avenue is shaded by trees and was built in the 1600s on the site of the city’s medieval ramparts; its verdant tunnel of foliage protects pedestrians from the heat in summer. The aristocratic facades of the private Mansions line the Cours and their wrought iron balconies and finely carved doorways invite the visitor to explore. One of the nicest fountains you'll see is certainly the natural hot water fountain covered with moss, dating from 1734. Note the different architectural styles of Saint Sauveur Cathedral with a Romanesque nave, a Merovingian baptistery and a Gothic section. These various styles date between the 5th and 17th centuries. Whatever your interest is, the ambiance of Aix en Provence makes for an enjoyable excursion. Enjoy lunch before returning to the ship.
